We welcome FoodStorm to our school in Term Two.
FoodStorm is an exciting new cooking programme created by LittleCooks in partnership with sKids (Safe Kids in Daily Supervision).
This programme is for all our Year 7 students on Thursdays for 1 ½ hours and will be fully funded by our school, at no cost to families.
The FoodStorm programme is linked to the New Zealand Curriculum and will integrate Science which is our Term Two focus, with Mathematics, Food Technology and Literacy. The five Key Competencies of Thinking, Participating & Contributing, Managing Self, Relating to Others and Using Language, Symbols and Texts will also all be fully developed throughout this exciting programme.
FoodStorm has been carefully designed to develop our young people’s nutritional knowledge and cooking skills, allowing them to become active participants in their own health and wellbeing.
Throughout Term Two, students will learn to cook a new dish each week, as they work in small groups, often exposing their palettes to new and different flavours. They will learn cutlery and table setting and the importance of teamwork, tolerance and sharing. At the end of each workshop, the girls will get to enjoy what they have prepared and cooked.
There will also be the opportunity to participate in a national Cooking Competition against other schools.
The FoodStorm programme supports, emphasises and empowers students to learn the stages of the cooking process within a safe environment and to be able to transfer their knowledge at home.
FoodStorm is facilitated by two professional tutors, supervised by myself. We will be using the hall kitchen facilities. Any food allergies have been acknowledged and accounted for.
We know that as adults, our young people will work and interact with people from different cultures and backgrounds, and food and healthy lifestyles will certainly be the conduit for global connections and communications, no matter where their futures will take them.
At the end of the Term, the girls will prepare a three course meal set for Fine Dining.
