LANGUAGE ACQUISITION SHARPENS THE MIND
It is said that “Chinese is the language of the future” and that learning Mandarin is fast becoming an important skill for students in our schools today. Holy Cross is blessed to be a Confucius School and all our students have the opportunity to learn Mandarin every week
taught by Mrs Booth, our Specialist Language Linguist. We also welcome our MLA, Ting to our school.
On Saturday 18th November 2017, three students from our Intermediate School, Yoana Llenaresas – Yr 8, Jaden Llenaresas – Yr 7 and Tirzah Alfante – Yr 7, attended the Youth Chinese Test Level 1 and Level 2 examinations held at Auckland University, together with students from many Auckland schools.
The girls have had the opportunity to learn Mandarin (as have all our students) since Year 1 at Holy Cross and the girls have all had the full support of their families, who know the value of education, as well as learning other languages, especially Mandarin.
These students are committed to being fluent speakers and writers of Mandarin.
In 2016, Yoana achieved the highest score in the Youth Chinese Test Level 1, a credit to her hard work, and she did it again in 2017. Yoana is now studying in Year 9 at Avondale College; we know that she will continue to be successful.
Jaden and Tirzah have moved into Year 8 at our School.
We commend these students for their high work ethic, tenacity and passion for learning Languages. It is truly a gift from God that will benefit them immensely in the future.
The challenge is now out to more students to take up this wonderful opportunity available to them in Room 11. Let's make 2018, our 'Year of more in Languages'.
Congratulations Jaden and Tirzah - our Year 8 'Mandarin Language' Stars!
Lucky world, here you come!
